Film club has tunnel vision

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 8th Sep 2000.

MOVIE fans donned suspender belts, fishnet stockings and bright red lipstick to watch a special screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

It marked the end of Malmesbury Film Society's summer season in the town's famous tunnel cinema.

The society will now move to its traditional winter venue at the Kings' Arms Hotel in the High Street.

Society chairman Tom Rayner said the club had managed to screen five films using a 16mm projector in the abandoned railway tunnel in the bottom of the garden at his Holloway Hill home.

The screenings were so successful the society and the tunnel were featured in a short television documentary on Points West last week.

He said: They thought we had found a wonderfully eccentric solution to problem of Malmesbury not having its own cinema.

He said the tunnel cinema with its bar and barbecue facilities had received compliments from all who had visited it.

He said: People said it was enchanting venue different and full of atmosphere. For one show we even had a bat flying in front of the screen. The tunnel also has amazing acoustics and beautiful light.

He said shows would resume in the tunnel next summer. For more details of the society telephone (01666) 823174.
