BOWLS: WILTSHIRE, who have won the South Western Counties League twice in the past three years, kick-off their 2002 campaign today (Sunday) when they take on Dorset at Shaftesbury.
Local players selected include Shari Akhavan, Scott Morgan and Alan Woodland (Swindon); Chris Cheesley (Purton); Shane Stevenson, Jeff Nichols, Mike Shawyer, Des Rideout and Dave Wheeldon (Westlecot).
They will be looking to get back to winning ways after losing their last two matches against S&D Women and the English Bowling Association. Led by president Chris Payne they entertain Southampton and District at Marlborough (3pm).
The event, sponsored by A-Plan Insurance, has prize money totalling £225 and last year's winners were Gary Morphet (Rodbourne Cheney), Steve Heseltine and Ken Orledge (both Chippenham Town).
The scoring method is different to normal bowls in that the first four bowls on each end count giving 10 points each end. The highest team aggregate on the day wins. A couple of spaces remain so if anyone is interested in entering they should contact Ray Sowden on (01793) 639500 as soon as possible.
Starting at 10am any youngster interested in taking part in a roll-up or full course of instruction should ring Ken Roe on 01793 853798. Bassett want to increase their junior section, they already have seven members.
They were beaten 159-96 by the host club.
VPs only winning rink out of six was skipped by the chairman, Alan Penfold, who used his local knowledge of the Hunts Copse green to great advantage. Wilts VPs are back in action tomorrow against Northants at Supermarine (2.30pm start)
