Leisure complex approved

From the Salisbury Journal, first published Sunday 19th Aug 2007.

SALISBURY City football club manager Nick Holmes has welcomed the decision by planners to give the go-ahead for a new leisure centre in Amesbury that will carry his name.

The Nick Holmes Leisure complex will be built at Midsummer Place on the Solstice Park development and will be up and running in 2009.

Planning permission was given for the huge complex last week by members of Salisbury District Council's northern area planning committee.

The centre will offer the latest sports and leisure facilities including all-weather five-a-side football pitches and tennis courts, dance studios and squash courts, a swimming pool, sauna and whirlpool as well as a lounge area, restaurant, children's creche and play area.

It will also provide a conference and banquet facilities.

This week Nick Holmes said the new centre will be "a massive help" to Salisbury football club and its plans for the future as it starts its first season in the Blue Square premier league.

He said: "As well as providing additional training facilities, the development will help provide employment for some of the club's full-time professionals. I'm sure they'll be able to get involved there in some shape or form."

Marketing executive for Solstice Park, Alexandra Spencer, said Nick Holmes Leisure will provide much-needed new sports and leisure provisions for the surrounding area as well as conference facilities for "the growth town of Amesbury."
